、Read the passage and then answer the questions. It is natural for young people to be critical of their parents at times and to blame them for most of the misunderstandings between them. They have always complained, more or less justly, that their parents are out of touch with modern ways; that they a

、re possessive and dominant; that they do not trust their children to deal with crises; that they talk too much certain problems and that they have no sense of humor, at least in parent-child relationships.I think it is true that parents often underestimate their teenage children and also forget how

、they themselves felt when young.Young people often irritate their parents with their choices in clothes and hairstyles, in entertainers and music. This is not their motive. They feel cut off from the adult world into which they have not yet been accepted. So they create a culture and society of thei

、r own. Then, if it turns out that their music or entertainers or vocabulary or clothes or hairstyles irritate their parents, this gives them additional enjoyment. They feel they are superior, at least in a small way, and that they are leaders in style and taste.Sometimes you are resistant, and proud

、 because you do not want your parents to approve of what you do. If they did approve, it looks as if you are betraying your own age group. But un that case, you are assuming that you are the underdog: you cant win but at least you can keep your honor. This is a passive way of looking at things. It i

、s natural enough after long years of childhood, when you were complete under your parents control. But it ignores the fact that you are now beginning to be responsible for yourself. If you plan to control your life, co-operation can be part of that plan. You can charm others, especially your parents,

、ive D. independent Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war? War is an ancient institution which has existed for at least six thousand years. It was always bad and usually foolish, but in the past the human race managed to live with it. Modern ingenuity has changed this. Either Man wil

、l abolish war. Or war will abolish Man. For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the most serious danger, but bacteriological or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. If we succeed in abolishing nuclear weapons, our work will not be done. It will never be done unt

、il we have succeeded in abolishing war. To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way, not as contest of force, in which the victory goes to the side which is most skilful in killing people, but by arbitration in accordance with agreed principles of law. I

、t is not easy to change very old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted. There are those who say that the adoption of this or that ideology would prevent war. I believe this to be a big error. All ideologies are based upon dogmatic statements which are, at best doubtful, and at worst, tot

、ally false. Their adherents believe in them so fanatically that they are will to go to war in support of them. The movement of world opinion during the past few years has been very largely such as we can welcome. It has become a commonplace that nuclear war must be avoided. Of course very difficult
