5、ame location.) protagonist: hero heroine leading role Academy Award for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best supporting Actress. (Caroline, in her forties stands in the same doorway ) of the same house where she lived and grew up. She sees a car with Florida plate driving up
6、to the house. Caroline steps out of the doorway and heads for the car out of which exit her brother Michael! and his wife Betty. They hugged each other.) head for where is the bomber heading for? Carrying the wound, the ambulance was straightly headed for the hospital. Michael: I sis. CAROLIN
7、E: Hi, Betty. BETTY: I, Caroline. (In the living room of their mother’s house that day, a lawyer hands Michael a document.) LAWYER: Ah, Michael, if I could just get you to sign this here which gives you the contents from the safe deposit box.(Michael does.)Fine. And this one please, which clears
8、the bank of all further responsibility for the contents Safe deposit box? I’m going to deposit the 2000 dollars in the Bank of China Withdraw withdrawal Please make out a withdrawal slip beforehand. BETTY: This is kind of exciting. Maybe we’ll find out your mother had secret millions lying arou
9、nd? Kind of : Where can we find a restaurant? I’m kind of hungry (Caroline smiles weakly .Michael hands back the papers.) LAWYER: Well, why don’t we get started? Now your mother is interred at Seer Heights Funeral Home until arrangements can be made. Inter After interring his murdered beloved,
10、 he went on the way of revenge. The top task of the earthquake aftermath is to search for and rescue those who are buried under the ruins. MICHAEL:(to his sister)I thought everything was arranged. CAROLINE: No, there’s a problem. MICHAEL: what problem? LAWYER: Well, your mother left explicit in
11、structions that she wished to be cremated. 1.Explicit: The reason why I’m not responsible for the damage has been explicitly stated! He shows an explicit intention of coup death. 2.cremate? cremation. Cremation is being advocated by the Government as an environment-friendly way of interment. M
12、ICHAEL: Cremated? CAROLINE: I know .I don’t understand it either. MICHAEL: When did she decide this? LAWYER: Well, apparently just before her death. MICHAEL: This is crazy. I don’t know anybody who gets cremated. BETTY: Lots of people do. MICHAEL: Well, no one in my family did! Dad bought ceme
13、tery plots at prairie hill, one for him and one for Mom. 1.?plot an experimental plot of rice cemetery plot The plot thickens. 2.?prairie A single can start a prairie fire. Prairie state LAWYER: Well , it clearly states in the will MICHAEL: I don’t care what it says! (to Caroline)Maybe Mama
14、 was delirious, you know. Maybe she didn’t know what she was saying ,you know. If she wanted to be cremated, why the hell die she let dad buy two plots, huh? 1.?Delirious be delirious with joy 2.?the hell What the hell are you going to do? LAWYER: Well, she was very specific. She wanted her ash
15、es to be thrown over Rosmand? Bridge. MICHAEL: What! BETTY: Bizarre! CAROLINE: Mr. Peterson, are you sure Mama wrote all this? LAWYER: Well, it was notarized and witnessed by a Mrs. Lucy Delaney. Maybe you can ask her. 1.?notarize notarization The national College English Speaking Contest is n
16、otarized by Beijing Notary office. 2.?witness The witness asserted the senior officer to be the murderer. The year 2001 witnessed China’s success in getting into the World Cup. MICHAEL: Who the hell is Lucy Delaney? CAROLINE: I remember Mrs. Delaney, but I just have no idea what she was… MICHA

We’re not cremating her and throwing her ashes all over some bridge where we can’t even go visit her because she’s going to be blown all over the place like an ashtray BETTY: Imagine people driving over her and doggies doing their business… MICHAEL: (i
18、nterrupting) We’re not doing it! I’m not even sure it’s Christian. BETTY: Maybe it’s an Italian thing.(to the lawyer) Their mother was Italian. MICHAEL: Doesn’t matter. Move on. (The woman dare not object. The Lawyer raises his eyebrows and continues.) LAWYER: Well, we can come back to this ,Why
19、 don’t we open the box? (A: key is? inserted into the lock of the safe deposit box and the lid is opened. There are some papers, deeds, et. Michael!? Begins sorting through these. Caroline notices a manila envelope addressed to her mother, postmarked 1965. She opens it up to find two letters and a
20、few photographs-Francesca standing near a covered bridge, her hair wind? blown, her expression serene, beautiful and sad. ) CAROLINE: Michael, look at these-I’ve never seen these pictures of mama. Have you? (Betty and Michael look over her shoulder. He shakes “no”) CAROLINE(continued) It was in t
21、his envelope from 1965. BETTY: She’s not wearing a bra.(takes the bridge photo Well, that’s the Holywell Bridge. In case anybody’s interested.) (Michael returns to the other papers. Betty takes the photograph for further examination. Caroline opens one of the letters and begins to read.) MICHAEL:
22、 (to Lawyer) Why are there two deeds here? LAWYER: I’ll see them .This is for the additional acres he purchased in 1959. MICHAEL: And this? LAWYER: Those are bills of sale from the equipment your mother sold in… (Throughout their conversation, Caroline reads the letter and her expression sinks i
23、nto one of shock and con-fusion .She flips to the last page of the letter to read who it is from. She can’t believe her eyes.) sink Her heart sank within her as she knew she couldn’t pass the exam. LAWYER: Oh, this one is for the original parcel your father purchased. And… CAROLINE: Michael. MI
24、CHAEL: (reading documents)Yeah. CAROLINE: Michael! MICHAELL(irritated) Why? CAROLINE: Could you come her for a minute, please? MICHAEL: Why? Where are we going? (They exit, leaving Betty and the Lawyer in the living room.) BETTY: Did she say anything in there about me, about leaving me anythin
25、g in particular? In particular: The man bought many presents for his family and a lovely rose for his wife in particular. LAWYER: No. (Michael and Caroline reenter the living room. Michael’s expression now matches CAROLINE in disbelief.) 1.?match: The color of this new hat matches that of the
26、coat. 2.?in disbelief: He is looking at the cash in disbelief and can’t imagine he can make so much money. BETTY: What’s going on ? MICHAEL: Um … we were just wondering how it might be better if Caroline and I would look over the stuff by ourselves. Not keep you two waiting around.(to the Lawyer
27、) I’ll contact your office about the legal work. We were just wondering how it might be better if… I was just wondering how it might be better if I went there first and then you would go the other day. (Inside the KITCHEN LATER,CAROLINE is reading the letter to Michael.) CAROLINE: “I struggle to
28、 put it together in a way that allows me to continue knowing we’re on separate road. But then I look through the lens of my camera, and you’re there.. I start to write an article and I find my-self writing it to you. It’s clear to me that now we have been moving towards each other, towards those fou
29、r days , all our lives. Separate She and her sisters have separate rooms in the hotel. MICHAEL: (rises and interrupts)I don’t want to hear anymore! Burn the damn thing! I don’t want to hear it! Throw it away! (CAROLINE continues reading silently. Michael’s curiosity gets the better of him.) get
30、 the better of The young man got the better of other players and won the table tennis match. MICHAEL: What’s he saying now? CAROLINE: Well, he just goes on about how if mama ever needed him, she could reach him through the National Geographic magazine in Washington D.C. He was a photographer. He
31、 promises not to write again. And then all it says is … I love you …Robert. The National Geographic magazine: Washington D.C. Washington District of Columbus. MICHAEL: Robert! Jesus! I’ll kill him CAROLINE: That would be some trick. He’s already dead. That’s what this other letter is.(takes the
32、letter and skims From his attorney. He left most of his things to mama and requested…) MICHAEL: What? CAROLINE: That he be cremated and his ashes thrown on Rosmand Bridge. MICHAEL: DAMN HIM! I knew mama wouldn’t have thought of that herself. It was some damn perverted…photographic mind influencin
33、g her! When did the bastard die? CAROLINE:’82 MICHAEL: Wait a minute! That was three years after daddy. Do you think…? CAROLINE: I don’t know. I’m completely in the dark here. That’s what I get for moving away. In the dark They made the plan secretly and put everyone else in the dark. MICHAEL
34、: We were kids when this happened. I…I can’t believe it .(then , innocently )Do you think she had sex with him? Have sex with somebody…;make love with somebody… (CAROLINE cannot believe he is this dense) CAROLINE:(sarcastic)My Lord. It must feel real nice living inside your head with Peter Pan an
35、d the Easter Bunny. MICHAEL: Don’t talk to me like that. She was my mother for Christ’s sake. And now I find out she was… She was a … CAROLINE: What? Don’t say that! MICHAEL: Well, what am I supposed to think? CAROLINE: I can’t believe she never told me? We spoke at least once a week. How could
36、she do that? MICHAEL: How did she meet him? Did Dad know? Is there anything else in that envelope? CAROLINE: No, I don’t think so. I… (She dumps it over and a small key falls out. Pause, as Caroline and Michael look to each other-they grab the key and run out of the kitchen. At the foot of their
37、parents bed sits an walnut hope chest. They tries the key. It fits . They open the chest to find: Camera equipment, a chain with a medallion that reads “FRANCESCA,” three leather bound notebooks –and a sealed envelope with “Caroline or Michael” written on it.) CAROLINE/ MICHAEL: (at the same time)
38、You read it! (Caroline relents She takes out the letter and reads.) CAROLINE: “January, 1987.Dear Caroline. I hope you’re reading this with Michael. I’m sure he wouldn’t be able to read it by himself and he’ll need some help understanding all this.” (Insulted ,Michael pulls the letter out of her
39、hand and defiantly attempts to read it aloud himself to disprove his mother’s claim. But after looking at a few lines, he surrenders and hands the letter back to his sister.) CAROLINE:(cout’d) “First , and most of all, I love you both very much and although I feel fine, I thought it was time to put
40、 my affairs, excuse that word, in order.” MICHAEL: I can’t believe; she’s making jokes. CAROLINE:“After going through the safety deposit box, I ‘m sure you’ll find you’re way to this letter. It’s hard to write this to my own children. I could let this die with the rest of me, I suppose. But as one
41、 gets older, one’s fears subside. What becomes more and more important is to be known-know for all that you were during this brief stay. How sad it seems to me to leave this earth without those you love the most ever really knowing who you were. It’s easy for a mother to love her children no matter
42、what---it’s something that just happens. I don’t know if it’s as simple for children. You’re all so busy being angry at us for raising you wrong. His name was Robert Kincaid. He was a photographer and he was here in 1965 shooting an article for National Geographic on the covered bridges of Madison C
43、ounty. Remember when we got that issue how we felt like celebrities? Remember when we started getting the subscription?” How we felt like celebrities: (Caroline begins to search for the mentioned National Geographic.? The cover of one of them is just Rosmand Bridge.) CAROLINE: Oh, that’s Rosmand
44、Bridge. (She opens the magazine and finds Robert’s? photo on the first page.) That must be Robert Kincaid. (points to his chest in the photo ) And that’s Mum’s medallion (continues to read the letter) “I don’t want you to be angry with him . I hope after you know the whole story, you might even thin
45、k well of him. Even grateful.” MICHAEL: Grateful? Think well of : People will not think well of the strange young man until they know him. CAROLINE:(reads) “It’s all there in the three notebooks. ”(pick up the notebooks) (In the kitchen later, Caroline opens the first notebook which is dated AU
46、UST 1965. Michael sits beside her with a cup of coffee.) CAROLINE: (reads) “It was the week of the Illinois state Fair.” The two of you were going with Dad to exhibit Caroline’s prize steer. It was the Sunday night you left.(turns to Francesca’s? voice)I know it sounds awful but I couldn’t wait for
47、 you all to leave. You’re going to be gone until Friday. Four days, just four days…” 1.?Prize steer: 2.?I couldn’t wait for you all to leave. The students can’t wait for the long summer vacation. (DISSOLVE TO: 1965, in Johnson’s kitchen that night.) Francesca is busy preparing dinner as enjoyin
48、g a beautiful classical opera from the radio. Francesca: Michael! Caroline! Richard! Dinner! (Michael enters through a screen door from the back, letting the DOOR SLAM SHUT.) FRANCESCA: Michael, what did I tell you about that door, uh? Michael: Sorry (Richard, Francesca’s husband, enters after
49、Michael, letting the door SLAM the same way. Francesca is about to say something, but gives up .Then comes Caroline. The daughter, who seems to dislike operas, goes ahead and, without a word, tunes in some pop songs. Francesca still tries to keep silence. They take their seats.) Francesca: Ok, so,
50、would you like to say grace? CAROLINE :( emotionlessly) Grace! (Everyone begins –in complete silence. When Richard scans the table for something that obviously isn’t there, Francesca is up out of her seat before he can ask, at the fridge, grabbing the sour cream, closing the fridge and back at the
51、 table with incredible swiftness. No one makes any comment on her considerate service or even looks up with a warm smile, as if all should be taken for granted. Francesca looks at them quietly.) sour cream: take something for granted; we all take it for granted that children should look after the
52、ir parents when they are old. (Later in Richard and Francesca’s bedroom, Richard tries to pull out one of the drawers of the wardrobe but in vain.) Richard: Damn the drawer! Francesca: (pulls out the drawer successfully) You can’t get mad at it. Richard: Sorry, I didn’t mean the yell. Francesca
53、: I want you to stay away from anything too spicy Richard: Uh…uh. Francesca: Then you promise me. Richard: (a little impatient) I swear. Only filters and no more than half pack a day, in half an hour. Francesca: Because you know half pack to save, you will be better off. Richard: I know, I know
54、, I ‘m only kidding. Surely you don’t want to come? Francesca: I’m positive. Richard: what are you going to do for four days as a woman’s leisure? Francesca: Something I usually do except with less help. Richard: I really can’t sleep, you know, I can’t sleep next to you anymore. Francesca: So i
55、t’s only four days. (They kiss goodbye. The family’s truck disappears on the horizon and Francesca is left alone. That night, she sits in the dark with a classical opera in air when her pet dog hopping into her arms.) Francesca: (talks to the dog, the only companion at present ) Oh, God, where hav
56、e you been? You missed them, you know, they already left. My, you love me so much. You know I don’t like you. Get down…oh, God! ( The dog is very heavy.)You like this song? Just you and me. Just you and me…. (The next morning, when slapping a small carpet on the column at the doorway, she sees a tr
57、uck driving toward her house, kicking up dust. Francesca watches with suspicious curiosity as the truck stops and ROB-ERT KINCAID steps out.) ROBERT: Hi, you know I get the distinct feeling that I’m lost. FRANCESCA: Are you supposed to be in Iowa? ROBERT: Yeah. FRANCESCA: Well, then you’re not t
58、hat lost. Robert: I’m looking for a bridge. Got one of those covered bridges out here in this neighborhood? FRANCESCA: Rosmand Bridge? ROBERT: That’s it FRANCESCA: Well, you’re pretty close. It’s only about two miles from here. ROBERT: Which way? Francesca: Well, you go that way and come to th
59、e Carters and turn left. Robert: To Carters? Francesca: Carters’ farm, small house close to the road, big mean yellow dog. Robert: Mean yellow dog, ok? Francesca: Yeah, then you go along that road until you come to a fork and its only less than half a mile. Robert: And then where after the fork
60、? Francesca: The right, and then you …No, no, not that fork, excuse me. You pass Petersons. Robert: Petersons? Francesca: Petersons’ farm and past the told school house you turn left. It would be easier to tell you if the roads were marked. Robert: Yes, it certainly would. Francesca: Well, I ca
61、n take you if you want. Or I can tell you. I can take you or tell you. Either way, it’s up to you. I don’t care. It’s up to somebody to do something; It’s up to my parents to decide whether I should go to the party. Robert: I wouldn’t want to take you away from what you are doing. Francesca: No,
62、 I was just going to have some iced tea and then split the atom but that can wait. Robert: Ok. Francesca: I ‘ll just get my shoes. (She goes back into the house to put on her shoes .Minutes later she is at the truck on whose door some words are printed: KINCAID PHOTOGRAPHY,BELLINGHAM,WASHINGTON.)

64、D’S TRUCK, they drive in silence. Francesca is enjoying the breeze against her face.) ROBERT: Wonderful smell about Iowa -I’m kind of particular to this part of the country. Know what I mean? Be particular to Parents tend to be particular to their youngest child. FRANCESCA: No. ROBERT: Well, it
65、’s kind of hard to explain. I guess it’s in the loam or the soil. That rich, earthy, alive, well, maybe not alive. Anyway, you don’t smell it? FRANCESCA: Maybe it’s because I live here. ROBERT: Yeah, I guess so. It smells great, though. FRANCESCA: Are you from Washington originally? ROBERT: Yeah
66、, I lived there until I was about…my late twenties. Then I moved to Chicago and I got married. FRANCESCA: Oh. When did you move back? ROBERT: After the divorce. FRANCESCA: Oh.
