B Language experts say that spoken English was almost the same in the American colonies and Britain two hundred years ago. Americans began to change the sound of their speech after the Revolutionary War in1776. They wanted to make it different to separate themselves from the British in language, in the same way they separated themselves from the British government. Some American leaders proposed major changes in the language. Benjamin Franklin wanted a whole new system of spelling. His reforms were not accepted. But his ideas did influence others. One was Noah Webster. Webster wrote language books for schools. He believed the United States should have a system of its own language as well as government. Webster published a dictionary of the American language in 1828. It established rules for speaking and spelling the words used in American English. Webster wrote that all words should be said in the order of the letters that spell them. This is why Americans use the letters “e-r” to end many words instead of the British “r-e.” He spelled the word “center,” for example, “c-e-n-t-e-r,” instead of the British “c-e-n-t-r-e.” Webster’s rule for saying every part of a word made American English easier for foreign settlers to learn. They learned to say “waist-coat,” for example, the way it is spelled instead of the British “wes-kit.” The different languages of immigration who came to the United States also helped make American and British English different. Many of their foreign words and expressions became part of English As Americans speak them. Sometimes Americans and British people do not understand each other because of different word meanings. For example, the word “jumper” in Britain means a sweater. In the United States, it is a dress. The British word “brolly” is an “umbrella” in America. And the British call potato chips “crisps”. All of these differences led British writer George Bernard Shaw to joke that Britain and America are two countries separated by the same language! 25. What does the underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refer to? A. written English in Britain. B. Written English in America. C. Spoken English in America. D. Spoken English in Britain. 26. Because they found British English hard to speak D. Because foreign settlers wanted them to change their language. 27. Why do Americans use the word “meter” instead of the word “metre”? A. Because Benjamin Franklin didn’t like the word “metre”. B. Because the word “meter” was absorbed from other languages. C. Because Webster thought the word should be said in order of the letters that are spelt. D. Because Webster thought American English should be made easier for foreign settlers to learn. 28. Which of the following is NOT one of the reasons why English began to change in America? A. The government leaders. B. Webster. C. Immigration to America. D. The difficulty Americans had in understanding the British. C “Indeed,” George Washington wrote in his diary in 1785, “some kind of fly, or bug, had begun to eat the leaves before I left home.” But the father of America was not the father of bug. When Washington wrote that, Englishmen had been referring to insects (昆蟲(chóng)) as bugs for more than a century, and Americans had already created lightning-bug(螢火蟲(chóng)). But the English were soon to stop using the bugs in their language, leaving it to the Americans to call a bug a bug in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The American bug could also be a person, referring to someone who was crazy about a particular activity. Although fan became the usual term, sports fans used to be called racing bugs, baseball bugs, and the like. Or the bug could be a small machine or object, for example, a bug-shaped car. The bug could also be a burglar alarm, from which es the expression to bug, that is, “to install (安裝) an alarm”. Now it means a small piece of equipment that people use for listening secretly to others’ conversation. Since the 1840s, to bug has long meant “to cheat”, and since the 1940s it has been annoying. We also know the bug as a flaw in a puter program or other design. That meaning dates back to the time of Thomas Edison. In 1878 he explained bugs as “l(fā)ittle problems and difficulties” that required months of study and labor to overe in developing a successful product. In 1889 it was recorded that Edison “had been up the two previous nights discovering ‘a(chǎn) bug’ in his invented record player.” 29. We learn from paragraph 1 that_______. A. Americans had difficulty in learning to use the word bug B. George Washington was the first person to call an insect a bug C. The word bug was still popularly used in England in the 19th century D. Both English men and Americans used the word bug in the 18th century 30. What does the word “flaw” in the last paragraph probably mean? A. Fault. B. Explanation. C. Source. D. Finding. 31. The passage is mainly concerned with ________. A. the misunderstanding of the word bug B. the development of the word bug C. the public views of the word bug D. the special meanings of the word bug D Having a learning disability doesn’t mean you can’t learn, but you’ll need some help and need to work extra hard. If you have a learning disability such as dyslexia or dyscalculia, remember that you are not slow or stupid. Learning disabilities can be genetic. That means they can be passed down in families through the genes, But kids today have an advantage over their parents. Learning experts now know a lot more about the brain and how learning works, and it’s easier for kids to get the help they need. Dyslexia is a learning disability that means a kid has a lot of trouble reading and writing. Kids who have trouble with math may have dyscalculia. Other kids may have language disorders, meaning they have trouble understanding language and understanding what they read. It can be confusing, though. What qualifies as “trouble" enough to be diagnosed as a learning disability? Reading, doing math, and writing letters may be tough for lots of kids at first. But when those troubles don’t fade away and it’s really difficult to make any progress, it’s possible that the kid has a learning disability. Finding out you have a learning disability can be upsetting. You might feel different from everyone else. But the truth is that learning disabilities are pretty mon. And if your learning specialist or psychologist has figured out which one you’re facing, you’re on the right track. Now, you can start getting the help you need to do better in school. But for this special help to really work, you’ll need to practice the new skills you’re learning. It may take a lot of efforts every day. That can be a challenge, but you can do it soon, you’ll enjoy the results of all your hard work: more fun and success at school. 32. Children are likely to have a learning disability . A. if their parents have the same problem B. if they are not interested in a subject C. if they don’t get help in time D. if they don’t work hard 33.If a chinese student cannot understand English articles, what lerning disability they may have?
