1、 新課標(biāo)英語高一下Module 4 Unit 2 Working the land Reading教案 Teaching content: Module 4, Unit2: Working the land-a pioneer for all people Students: Class 3, Senior 1, The Affiliated High School of Peking University, Shenzhen Analysis of the students: There are 40 students in Class 3. Their English level
2、 is average and they are weak in grammar. However, the students are active in class. They are eager to take part in class activities and keen on presenting their opinions individually, which is a good quality for English study. Teaching aims and demands: 1. Language aims: a. To enable students to
3、 know about the scientist: Yuan Longping b. To introduce organic farming and green food a. To know the main idea of the reading passage 2. Emotion and Attitude aims: a. To encourage students to challenge themselves and be unselfish b To lead the students to discover the problems that human bei
4、ngs are facing besides food shortage so that they can have the proper attitude to the problems Teaching tools: a computer, a tape recorder Teaching procedures: Step1. Revision 1. Review grammar “gerunds” by looking at a proverb: Seeing is believing. 2. Review some verbs that are followed by
5、 gerunds and students are asked to list some of them. Teacher: Boys and girls, we learned gerunds yesterday and do you know how to say “眼見為實”. Students: Seeing is believing. T: Yes, now we are going to review some of the verbs that are followed by gerunds. Can you list some of them? All Students
6、: admit doing sth., enjoy/appreciate doing sth., finish doing, forgive doing, consider doing, mind doing, devote… to doing sth…, look forward to doing…, suggest doing, insist on doing sth…. Teacher: Great. And now we move on to the new lesson: A Pioneer For All People. Step2: Lead-in 1. Group wor
7、k: A. Students are asked to work in a group of 4 to discuss the questions as follows: 1. Have you ever grown any plants? If so, what did you do to grow them? How will you grow it? 2. Have you ever been to the countryside? What did you do there? 3.Are you from a farmer’s family? What do you know
8、about farming? 4. What do you think would happen if tomorrow there was suddenly no rice to eat, especially for those southerners in China? 5. If you had the chance to do one thing to help end hunger in the world, what would you do? B. Then a representative in each group is going to make a report.
9、 The following are the answers from the students. For the first question: S1: Yes, I have ever grown trees. Last year many trees were burnt in Nanshan, Shenzhen and we students were asked to plant trees again. First, we dug a hole deep enough and then we put the young plants inside the hole. Secon
10、d, we put some earth back to the hole. Finally we watered the tree. T (to the whole students): What did he grow? Ss: Trees. T: Why did he grow? Ss: Because trees were burnt. T: Good job. For the second question S2: I have been to the countryside with my parents and we went there by car. We c
11、aught fish, climbed mountains and walked in the field. T: So it must be a happy journey. S2. Yes. T: (to all students) What did she do in the countryside? Ss: Caught fish and…mm… climbed mountains. T: Right. For the third question: S3: I am not from a farmer’s family. But I believe my ance
12、stors might be farmers. As far as I know, farming is a hard job. If there are no farmers, we won’t have enough food to eat. T: Yes. Why is farming hard? Ss: Because farmers are working day and night. T: Absolutely. They are often working inside or outside? Ss. Outside. T: Especially in the sun,
13、 right? Ss. Yes. T: That may be the reasons why most of the farmers are sun-burnt. Shall we show our respect to them for their hard work? Ss: Of course. T: Ok, let’s move on to Question 4: What do you think would happen if tomorrow there was suddenly no rice to eat? S4: We would eat wheat, corn
14、 or other grain crops. We can also eat some vegetables or fruit. S5. But we will be short of energy-giving food and it is bad to our health. T: Completely right. Good point. S6. 16、ng. T: Why is he famous in China? Ss: Because he is known as ‘Father of Hybrid Rice’. T: Yes. Let’s see some pictures about hybrid rice. Do you like them? Ss: Yes. They look so beautiful. T: Would you like to eat them? Ss: Yes. T: But can you eat them right now? Ss: Yes…em…No, we can’t. T:
17、 Why? Ss: Because we should boil them. T: Yes, we should cook them well first. Well done. Now let’s see the picture about the output of hybrid rice. Yes, it is twice as large as the common rice. B. While-reading: 1.Fast reading--skimming T: Now it’s time for you to have the first reading abou
18、t the passage: A Pioneer for All People. After reading, please tell me what the text is mainly about. 2.Careful reading for specific information--scanning (3minutes) Students are required to read the passage carefully and try to find the specific information about Yuan Longping. Before reading,
19、 please keep these two questions in mind: (1)What does Mr. Yuan look like? (2) What achievements has he made for the people? After 5 minutes, students find the answer from the passage. C. Post-reading 1. Pair work: Fill in the blank about Mr. Yuan’s personal information. Personal Inform

21、 some tips are presented. Tips: appearance, job, birthplace, education, hobbies, dream, achievements… Here is an example dialogue from the students. Group 1: S1: Yuan Longping is a slim and hardworking scientist. S2: He is more like a farmer rather than a scientist because he often works the
22、 land in the sun. S3: He was born in Beijing in 1930. S4: And he graduated from Southwest Agriculture College. S1: He likes playing his violin and listening to violin music. S2: Sometimes he likes playing ma-jiang, swimming and reading. S3:His achievement is about hybrid rice. S4: And his ach
23、ievement is remarkable. T: Great. What a good word-- “remarkable”! Thanks for your good cooperation. Then two other groups need to show their descriptions about Mr. Yuan. Step 4: Extension Introduce some other species of hybrid grain crops to arouse students’ interest in learning. For example,
24、 green pepper, hybrid cotton, sweet pepper, pears, eggplants, corns, cabbages, watermelons and so on. Step 5: Further discussion How many big problems do human beings face nowadays? Please give some examples. (e.g. pollution) After discussion, the teacher may offer some tips as follows: Tips:
25、Environment, resources, energy sources, population, food supplies A sample dialogue: T: Why did Yuan devote himself to hybrid rice? Ss: Because he wants more rice is produced. T: Why? S1: Because people can have enough food and they won’t be in hunger. T: Yes, food supply is one of the biggest
26、 problems that human beings have to face. Besides, what other problems will people face? S2: Air pollution, S3: water pollution S4: noise T: Yes, and all these are concerned about environment, right? Any other problem? S5 Population? T: That’s it. What about the population in China? Ss: large
27、r and larger. T: What will happen if there is too much population? Ss: Crowded…well… no enough food, water, and place to live in. T: Brilliant. So human beings may also have the problems of resources and energy sources. Don’t forget there are still millions of people in the world are in hunger. I

29、out Yuan Longping. 2. Ex.2, 3 (p12) Ex 2 (p49) Thoughts after teaching: On the whole, it is a successful lesson. Students are very active in answering questions and they have followed the teacher in thinking and speaking. They have freely shown their own wonderful opinions. Students and the tea
30、cher cooperate well and all the tasks designed are successfully finished. However, there is no enough time to summarize in detail and it is better to offer students more time to think and present. Responses from the other teachers: The teacher has made a good preparation for the lesson. She has us
31、ed the proper teaching skills, which shows her rich knowledge. A large amount of information has been shown within the short 40 minutes. The whole lesson is organized well. Dozens of questions are designed step by step. Students are able to learn the new material unconsciously and gradually, which a
32、ccords with the New Syllabus. Students have more chances to practice English in different tasks. The co-operation between the teacher and students is good. In a word, it’s an excellent lesson. The room for improvement lies in two parts: one is in Revision. Students answered as a whole. Maybe it’s a good idea to have individual students try. The other is in Step 5: Further discussion.
