In their 8- year,12-album history, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starraltered (改 ) popular culture dramatically. And it wasnt just the suits andchanging lengths of hair the four Liverpool boys wore that had such an impact, butwhat they seemed to stand for. The world saw them as the voice of a new generation, one with a very different attitude to life.Their influence was at its height in the 1960s, but their music continues tostir listeners today. However, up until recently one aspect of the Beatles wasstruck inYesterday:The music had never been remastered (重新灌 ). But onSeptember 9 that situation came to an end, with the release of the entire bandsmusic in a digital makeover. It is probably the biggest reissue (重新 行 ) in popmusic history, said British newspaper theFinancialTimes. The albums were remastered at Abbey Road Studios in London, the locationwhere the band produced much of their work. The cover of their last album,AbbeyRoad of 1969, featured the four young men striding (大步行走 ) across a zebracrossing on Abbey Road itself. It is one of the most famous of all Beatles images.Recently, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the album, hundreds of Beatleslovers gathered there to show their appreciation.Pop groups come and go. The boy band pursued by screaming fans one year willbe forgotten the next. But the Beatles are one of the few groups whose music seemsto have endured (持久 ). Why? Paul McCartneys biographer Barry Miles has anexplanation.“They were the first rock band and they just happened to be thebest. They were the first band to play at stadiums, to have their own products. They were ground-breaking in every way,” he says.16 Why did the Beatles change popular culture?A Because of the suits and hairstyles of the four Liverpool boys.B Because of their albums.C Because of their different attitude to life.D All the above.17 Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the secondparagraph?A The Beatles influenced people at its height in the 1960s.B Their musicYesterday had never been remastered until September 9.C The entire bands music in a digital makeover will be remastered.D On September 9, their music came to an end.218 What is their last album?A Yesterday .B Abbey Road of 1969.C ComeTogether .D InMy Life .19 What is NOT the reason why their music can endure?A That they were the first rock band.B That they were the best one.C That they were the first band to play at stadiums and to have their ownworks.D That they wore special suits.20 Whats the main idea of the passage?A What are the Beatles?B Legendary band stays on top in digital times.C The origin of the Beatles.D Why are the Beatles popular with people?BOne of the worlds richest men has taken a close interest in one of mans mostbasic functions: visiting the toilet. Bill Gatess charitable organization, theBill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is looking for inventors to design the loo of the future, which, they hope, would improve sanitation for millions of people around the world. So, whats wrong with the traditional flush toilet? Firstly, it wastes a hugeamount of potential drinking water. Secondly, they are more likely to cause pollution. This is a real problem in many areas of the developing world, where, according to United Nations estimates, unsafe sanitation causes half of all hospitalizations. Younger people are particularly at risk. Illnesses which cause diarrhea are responsible for the deaths of about 1.5 million children a year. Finally, standard lavatories simply arent practical in remote areas. The challenge set by Bill Gates was to come up with a latrine which workswithout running water, electricity or aseptic tank. It also needed to operate for less than 5 cents. 28 designs were displayed at the recent Reinvent the Toilet fair, in Seattle, USA. Among them was one which turned human waste into electricity using microwaves, another which converted human waste into charcoal, and yet another which used urine for flushing. But the winner was a solar- powered design which generated hydrogen gas andelectricity. The team from the California Institute of Technology (CIT) picked upa prize of $100, 000.But clearly Bill Gates doesnt feel hes flushing money down the toilet. Afterthe Seattle event he said,“We couldnt be happier with the response wevegotten ,” Gates has even pledged $370m (2.2 billion RMB) more to the future toilet project. They hope to field test more prototypes over the next three years.21 Why is Bill Gates paying people to invent new toilets?A Because he wants to test peoples sense of creativity.B Because he wants to improve sanitation for many people.C Because he thinks the traditional ones are out of fashion.D Because he cant design this kind of things himself.322 Which of the following is NOT a problem with the traditional flush toilet?A They waste too much water.B They might cause diseases.C They are not always practical.D They are too complicated to use.23 The underlined word“ latrine” in the third paragraph might have similarmeanings to the word“_ _” in the text.A loo B sanitationC diarrhea D prototype24 The team from CIT won the prize because their design _A can change human waste into electricityB can turn human waste into charcoalC can produce power with solar energyD can use urine for flushing25 If someone“ flush money down the toilet”, they are _A showing off their wealthB being angry with their working conditionsC wasting money for nothingD expressing their great determination4 作 ( 十 ) .1.Dthat 后的句子描述的是他的一個(gè)愿望,由此可知答案。make a wish 固定 ,意 “ ( 在心中 ) 下一個(gè)心愿”。 come up 出 ,流行, 生; come over 來; sort out 分 。 even 甚至;still 仍然; yet 仍,至今。 9 A to his surprise above all 首先,最重要的是; to be honest 說 ; afterwards 之后。 catch up with跟上,趕上。 .
