1、Chapter.Before the InterviewImportance of the Interview The interview is one of the most important and crucial forms of face to face communication and is usually the deciding factor when it comes to getting a job.The Interviewer is able to analyze and test the candidates interpersonal communication
2、skills,confidence and personality through the interview.The job applicant is given a chance to present himself and his achievements,personality and career goals to the prospective employer.As a job seeker/interviewee,it is your responsibility to conduct in-depth research into the Companys policies,s
3、ervices and hiring practices.Begin by visiting the Cos official website and read up about its mission,policies,people and work culture.Based on such research,prepare yourself to handle a volley of questions that will be thrown at you during the job interview.Different Types of Interviews:Screening S
4、econd interview Panel Behavioral Structured Unstructured Semi-structured Screening This is usually done by the Human Resources Department or an outside agency.They want to eliminate candidates who do not have the basic requirements for the job.one interviewer interviewing one candidate(This type of
5、interview is the most common)Second interview You passed the first interview with flying colors and you just got a call to schedule a second interview.The goal of a second interview is to glean more information about the applicant,usually from a different perspective to see if he or she will fit in
6、well about the company.Do not assume that a second interview will lead to a job offer;take pains with the preparation.Panel This is also called a group interview.The panel or group is made up of people you would be working with.It can be as few as two people or up to as many as nine people.They have
7、 a list of prepared questions and will usually take turns asking the questions.Your Purpose:To make a good impression.Make sure you make eye contact with each member of the group.Focus on the individual who asked the question.After answering the question,look around the group and see if anyone wante
8、d further clarification.Treat them all with respect.You will not know who is going to make the hiring decision.Behavioral You will be asked about real-life situations.They are looking at how you respond in given situations.Some examples:Give me an example when you had to deal with a difficult studen
9、t/teacher/neighbor.What happened?What did you do?Tell me about a major obstacle you encountered in your last job/class and how you handled it.What types of things make you angry?How have you dealt with them?Structured In a structured interview,a list of questions has been prepared based on the job r
10、equirements.The same questions are asked of every candidate.The same questions are asked in the same order.Notes are taken.Unstructured This interview can be very stressful if you are not prepared.The interviewer may ask a question or two and then wait.You should be prepared with questions of your o
11、wn and show initiative is asking them.Semi-structured interview This type of interview is a blend of the structured and unstructured formats,with a small number of pre-determined questions that will be asked of all candidates,along with some rsum-based questions.First impression is the last impressi
12、on!The interview presents an ideal situation to make the first impression on the employer.Your success or failure in the interview can depend on your appearance and the interviewers first impression of you.Leave a positive and strong impact on the interviewers so that they are convinced of your appr
13、opriateness for the job.Tips for a Good Interview Be Prepared:Research the Company/Organization through its website or other journals etc.and read up as much as possible about the Companys services,people,history and future plans.Read the About Us section of the company web site to get the latest in
14、formation and news.If you have a connection,use it to get some insider information.Be On Time:Reach the Interview Venue well ahead of time.Be Cool,Calm&Collected:Most people are apprehensive about being interviewed.Try to remain calm and have confidence in your abilities.Maintain Good Eye Contact:Yo
15、ur ability to maintain good eye contact with the person talking to you projects your confidence level.Look Good,Feel Great-First impression is always the last impression so dress well for the interview.Refrain from being too casually dressed and pay attention on your clothes,nails,hair etc.Look clea

17、view?Research When you begin your research process you are attempting to achieve two goals.When you start researching one of the first areas you need to identify relate to what your position will be at the company,training program,history and future plans.The second research objective is to identify
18、 areas of questioning relevant to the above-mentioned issues.Research Ask questions at appropriate timingWhen the interview process becomes one sided,it becomes boring for the interviewer.The job interview process should be a back and forth line of communication where both parties participate.This h
19、elps build a rapport with the interviewer and keeps your name fresh in their mind.Questions you can ask Some questions will arise naturally during the interview,but it is wise to prepare some questions in advance.Asking questions will demonstrate your interest and help you determine if the job fits
20、your personality,skills,interests,and values.It is important to compose your own questions;however,the following may give you a starting point:What do you see as the priorities for someone in this position?Please describe a typical day on the job?What training programs do you have available for your
21、 employees?How are employees evaluated and promoted?What kind of work can I expect to be doing the first year,if Im hired?What/where are the greatest opportunities for the organization?How would you describe your organizations management style,culture,and/or working environment?What are the companys
22、 plans for the future?What is the companys policy on providing seminars,workshops,and training so employees can keep up their skills or acquire new ones?Practice Once the proper amount of research is completed,it is vital that that another step of the job interview preparation be completed,practice.
23、Every interview has a set series of questions that are either common knowledge or readily available on the internet.Practice The best way to prepare for the job interview is to practice with a family member or friend in a sample job interview.The sample job interview will help you in stating your an
24、swers eloquently as well as receive constructive feedback from an individual who may know your skills.Interview Etiquette Before the Interview Your hair should be clean and combed.Nails should be clean and trimmed.Be conservative and cautious in dressing.If the company does not have a dress code,it
25、is best to dress conservatively.Arrive at least 10 minutes before your interview.The extra minutes will also give time to fill out any forms or applications that might be required.Turn off your cell phone or pager.Dont assume that whoever greets you is the receptionist.Interview Etiquette During the
26、 Interview It is good etiquette to wait to sit down until the interviewer invites you to do so.Make a positive and professional first impression by being assertive and giving a firm handshake to each interviewer and addressing each interviewer by name as he or she is introduced.Reinforce your profes
27、sionalism and your ability to communicate effectively by speaking clearly and avoiding uhs,you knows,and slang.Keep your body language polite.Do not lean forward aggressively or sit with your arms folded across your chest.Neither should you sit bolt upright in your chair as if sitting to attention.Y
28、ou should have good posture,but keep it relaxed and friendly.If you dont understand a question,ask for it to be repeated or rephrased.Maintain a natural amount of eye contact but dont stare.Do show enthusiasm and a genuine interest in the company and your interviewers.Interview Etiquette After the I
29、nterview Shake each interviewers hand and thank each interviewer by name.Make an appreciation call or send a thank you note as soon after the interview as possible.Tricky situations Awkward situations may occur during an interview,and it is up to you to be prepared to handle confidently whatever hap
30、pens.The key to tricky situations is to remember that barriers to employment can often be overcome by focusing on the positive.Circumstances that you may find problematic are:Salary If applying for short-term work,it is acceptable to discuss salary.You can ask about it as your final question.Employe
31、rs hiring full-time or contract staff may inquire about salary during a first interview to know your expectations.Always try to defer the subject until you have been offered the job,but if the employer insists,offer a salary range that you know is realistic based on your research.Being stumped When
32、you are not sure how to respond to a question,the key is to remain calm and positive,focus on the question,and continue to remind yourself that you are doing well.You may request clarification if you are not sure what the interviewer is asking or pause and politely ask for a few moments to consider
33、your response;however,dont take too much time because employers want to see that you can think well under pressure.After a brief pause,if you still cannot respond to the interviewers question,you may ask to defer your answer to the end of the interview.Of course,if youre stumped because you simply d
34、o not know the answer,be honest with the interviewer in a positive and professional manner.When asked a question about a skill that you dont have,demonstrate that you have the transferable skills necessary to succeed in the position.For example,I have excellent computer skills but I do not have know
35、ledge of that specific software.However,I did learn FrontPage,a similar program,on my own and quickly applied the concepts by independently creating a website for a project.Having never worked or no recent work experience Tell the interviewer about any relevant courses/workshops,volunteer/internship
36、 experiences,and/or extracurricular activities.Convey your interest in the position and indicate that you look forward to a long-term association with the company.Low marks In any case,explain briefly and honestly what happened and describe what steps you have taken to remedy the situation so that i
37、t is no longer an issue.“I know my grades were less than stellar during my third year,but I really improved this term because I attended a series of study skill workshops,and they made a huge impact.I now know how to manage my time successfully,and Im confident that I will perform well in this posit
38、ion.”Negative questions How do you feel about working long hours of overtime with no pay?How many hours are you prepared to work?Did your previous company live up to your expectations?What do you dislike about the job you have applied for?Your colleague suspects you have stolen his watch during the
39、period of internship.How do you deal with that?You are asked to cut the cake into eight shares to your eight colleagues at a friends birthday party.And there must be one left in the box.What would you do?Do you like to be praised?Why?Do you like to be criticized?Why?Why are you out of job for such a long time?Which do you think is more important for you,family or career?Do you prefer working with others or alone?How long would you stay with us?
