Before this time health care had to be paid for by individuals.Nowadays central government is directly responsible for the NHS although it is administered by local health authorities. About 83 percent of the cost of the health service is paid for by general taxation and the rest is met from the National Insurance contributions paid by those in work. There are charges for prescription and dental care but many people, such as children, pregnant women, pensioners, and those on Income Support, are exempt from payment. Most people are registered with a local doctor (a GP, or General Practitioner) who is increasingly likely to be part of a health centre which serves the community. As the population of Britain gets older, the hospital service now treats more patients than before, although patients spend less time in hospital. NHS hospitals many of which were built in the nineteenth century provide nearly half a million beds and have over 480, 000 medical staff. The NHS is the biggest employer in Europe although Britain actually spends less per person on health care than most of her European neighbours.During the 1980s there was considerable restructuring of the Health Service with an increased emphasis on managerial efficiency and the privatization of some services (for example, cleaning). At the end of the 1980s the government introduced proposals for further reform of the NHS, including allowing some hospitals to be selfgoverning, and encouraging GPs to compete for patients. Patients would be able to choose and change their family doctor more easily and GPs would have more financial responsibility. The political questions continue of how much money should be provided to support the NHS and where it should come from.【解題導(dǎo)語(yǔ)】 國(guó)家保健中心由中央政府直接負(fù)責(zé),但由地方當(dāng)局管理。 16We can know from the first paragraph that_.Athe original aim of the NHS was to provide equal basic health care for everybodyBpeople didnt have to pay for health care since the NHS was set upCpatients were charged for receiving health care before 1948Dthe NHS was an organization which gave free advice to villagers答案C細(xì)節(jié)理解題。 17What do we know about the NHS?AIts managed by the central government.BIts cost is mainly paid for by the National Insurance contributions.CIt hires more people than any other unit in Europe.DFewer patients go to its hospitals than before because they spend less on health care. 根據(jù)第四自然段“The NHS is the biggest employer in Europe.” 18All the following statements about GPs are true EXCEPT that they_.Atake care of the local peoples healthBoften take part in competitions to see who is the bestCwork under high pressure nowadaysDhave more responsibilities than before答案B細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)最后一自然段話“and encouraging GPs to compete for patients.” 19What does the underlined word “exempt” probably mean? 20The biggest problem for the NHS is_.Amany hospitals are too old to be usedBsome services are in the charge of individualsCmore and more patients go to GPs for treatmentDthere is not enough money for further reform答案D細(xì)節(jié)理解題。 BFor most of his life,Daniel Defoe worked as a business man. However, when he was 60,he wrote something that was a great success. It was Robinson Crusoe, the first novel in English literature. Why do we say that Robinson Crusoe was the first novel in English literature?Novels are fulllength invented stories. But even if the events and people in the story are invented, they are described in a way that makes them seem real. Before Robinson Crusoe, nobody in English literature had written a story like that.In Robinson Crusoe,Defoe describes Robinsons adventures in great detail. It seems that the writer is talking to the reader. In the early 18th century, most writers wrote in a complex style that was very different from the way people talked.Critics at the time didnt like the style of Robinson Crusoe. They didnt understand that Defoe had created something new in literature.Robinson Crusoe is not only an exciting story but also a great novel. It makes the reader think about important questions about life. One interesting idea in the book is about the relationship between individuals and society.Robinson lives alone on an island. He is free to live in any way he wants, but he chooses to live as a civilized man.Another interesting idea in the book is how people need one another in society. On the island, there is nobody to help Robinson. He has to do everything by himself. He has to learn how to be a builder,a farmer and how to make clothes and shoes. This experience teaches Robinson how we all need the help of experts.Values are also discussed in the book. When Robinson goes back to the sunken ship, looking for things that could be useful,he picks up some gold and says,“This is no use to me.”He understands that something has value on condition that it is useful.Robinson Crusoe was the first novel in English literature. It was also the first bestseller. When he wrote the story,Defoe changed English literature for ever.【解題導(dǎo)語(yǔ)】 你知道英國(guó)文學(xué)中“歷險(xiǎn)小說(shuō)”的開(kāi)創(chuàng)者是誰(shuí)嗎? 一起來(lái)了解一下英國(guó)第一位偉大的小說(shuō)家吧!21From this passage,we know that Daniel Defoe _.Ashowed his time.BIt was based on a real story.CIt opened a new era in English literature.DIt was more a story than a novel. 根據(jù)第二段中的“Critics at the time didnt like the style of Robinson Crusoe.” 根據(jù)第二段中的“Before Robinson Crusoe, nobody in English literature had written a story like that.” 23Which of the following is the style of Robinson Crusoe?AImaginative. BLifelike.CAutobiographical.
