The survey was conducted by means of a questionnaire which included three parts. The first part of the questionnaire tells us how frequent the students eat in the canteen . From the second section we can find out whether students are satisfied with the Haoyuan Restaurant including the food quality, the service quality and the dining environment. In the last part, we discuss some methods to improve our canteen. Sixty respondents participated in the survey thus we regarded it as credible. 2 Body 2.1 Survey Methodology We believe that peoples attitudes to the restaurant directly affect the frequency people eat there. Further more, the restaurants quality of the food, service and the environment determines peoples attitudes to it. As we all know, the food quality includes the taste, price, variety and quantity. Based on the method above, we design our questionnaire. 2.1.1 The Questionnaire The questionnaire is constituted by three parts which are related to each other. You will see the questionnaire in appendix1. The first part includes question one which is about the frequency students eat in the restaurant. Question two to question seven belong to the second part. From this part, we can conclude whether students are satisfied with the canteen, which is the main purpose of this survey. The last part is made up by the last four questions including three closed questions and one open question. 2.1.2 The SampleMore than 80% students eat in the canteen less than two times. Most students are not satisfied with the Haoyuan Restaurant, thats to say students are unsatisfied not only with its food but also with its service and environment . About 70% students want to set up a separate cooking window and 3% of them think it is not necessary. 40% students think nothing appeals to them while 20% loves the noodles and 20% loves the combo. In the question “Whats the limitation of Haoyuan Restaurant compared with the snacks”, a number of students suppose they cant stand its less varieties and less taste. At last, 28% people hope that the food of the restaurant can be varied and about 10% people want the food to be cheaper, more delicious and the environment to be cleaner. At the same time, about 13% students care about the quantity and the number of windows. 2.2 Analysis and ResultsAs we have said above that there are three parts in the questionnaire, we will analysis the data separately. 2.2.1 The First PartLook at chart 1 as follows.Chart 1 Average percentage of students eating in the Restaurant each mealAverage percentage of students eating in the Restaurant each mealWeighttimes headcountpercentage0.5less than once1118.33%1once2033.33%2twice2338.33%3three times610.00%The final result 49.72%We can see that there are four cases: less than once, once, twice and three times. We assign a weight to each of them to get the average percentage of the students eating in the restaurant. Multiply the weight and the relevant percentage and then sum up the results together, we can get the total average times students eating in the canteen each day. If we divide the former number by three, the final result is what we want to know, the average percentage of students eating in the restaurant each meal.As the chart says, only 49.72% students eat in the canteen. About half of them eat outside and relating department must pay close attention to this situation.2.2.2 The Second PartIn this part, we try to find out how satisfied are students with the canteen. Firstly we get the degree of satisfaction with the food of the canteen considering its taste, quantity, variety and price. Secondly we analyze the degree of satisfaction with the restaurant including its food, service and environment. Look at chart 2 as follows. Chart 2 The degree of satisfaction with the food in the restaurant(including the quality, quantity, variety and price)The degree of satisfaction with the food in the restaurant(including the quality, quantity, variety and price) WeightFactorsABCDGrade0.2Price1537801.88 0.2Quantity1525291.63 0.2Variety1233241.67 0.4Quality6202952.45 Final Grade2.02 As our questionnaire arranged, there are four opinions for each question: very satisfied, satisfied to some degree, unsatisfied to some degree and not satisfied at all. When analyze these questions quantitatively we assign each of them a number: four, three, two and one. Multiply the number with the relating proportion of the students choosing this opinion in the whole respondents, we can get the grade of each factor. Its obvious that all factors arent important equally, so we assign a weight to each factor after a long-time discussion as the chart shows. Multiply the weight with the relating grade and the sum them together, we can get the final grade of the food in the canteen. From the calculation, we can see that the final grade of the food is 2.02 and the grades are very low on the whole. The grade of the price is only 1.88, quantity 1.63, variety 1.67 and quality 2.45. It means that most students are not satisfied with the food. Look at chart 3 as follows.Chart 3 The degree of satisfaction with the restaurantThe degree of satisfaction with the restaurantWeightFactorsABCDGrade0.6Food2.020.3Service2272741.540.1Environment645902.65Final Grade1.94We can draw the chart above in the same way. The final grade is 1.94, lower than the grade of the food. The grade of environment is 2.65 while the grade of service is 1.54. That means the service and environment cant meet the requirements of students like the food. 2.2.3 The third PartIn this part, we arrange fours questions and we would like to discuss them separately. They are the necessity of adding a separate cooking window, favourite dishes in the restaurant, shortage of the restaurant compared with the snacks on the road and advices to the restaurant. Now look at chart 4 as follows.Chart 4 The necessity of adding a separate cooking windowThe necessity of adding a separate cooking windowWeightOpinionsHeadcountPercentage1Necessary420.70 0Not necessary20.03 0.5Dont mind160.27 Final Result0.83We can see that 70% students are for the idea to add a separate cooking window and only 3% students are against it. The rest of the respondents dont care. We assign each of them a weight: one, zero and zero point five. Using the same method we can get the final result. It means that the necessity of adding a separate cooking window is 0.83 which is very high rate. Most students will be glade if the idea is carried out.Look at chart 5 as follows.Chart 5 Favourite dishes in the restaurantNoneNoodles and fried ricecomboordinary mealsnacks and soy milkHeadcount241213101Percentage0.40.20.22 0.17 0.02 From the chart, what attracts us most is that nearly half of the students like none of the food in the restaurant. It is really a big failure of the restaurant. Thus its very urgent to improve the quality of the food.Look at chart 6 as follows:Chart 6 Shortage of the restaurant compared with the snacks on the roadShortage of the restaurant compared with the snacks on the roadLess varietyNot tastyPoor locationExpensiveSmall quantityLimited seatsHeadcount454714151721Percentage0.28 0.30 0.09 0.09 0.11 0.13 As we all know, many students prefer to eat the snacks on the road rather than have a meal in the school restaurant. So we arrange this question to find out the shortages of the restaurant compared with the snacks on the road. From the chart above, we can see that 30% students mention the poor quality of the food in the restaurant and 28% students refer to its less variety. Also other shortages appear such as limiter seats, small quantity, high price and poor location. All shortcomings should be take into account. Look at chart 7 as follows.Chart 7 Advices to the restaurantPeople give a lot of suggestions because so many students arent satisfied with the restaurant and we all want to improve it. What students care most is the variety of the food because 28% of them mention this. About 10% students want to add quantity, add windows, improve the environment, lower the price and improve the taste of the meal.We can draw the conclusion that most students agree to add a separate cooking window and dont like any of the dishes in the restaurant. What most of them deem is that the restaurant is not as good as the snacks on the road in the aspect of the quality and variety of the food. So they want the relevant department to do something to improve the the types and quality of the food. At the same time, better environment, larger quantity, more windows and lower price are required, too. 3 Conclusion The survey shows that most students are not satisfied with the Haoyuan Restaurant. It was consisted with what we often heard. Only 50% students go to the restaurant everyday. Most students are not satisfied with the restaurant because the restaurant gets only 2 points while the full mark is 4 points. And whats sad is that 40% students dont like any meals of the restaurant . 83.3% students think that it is very necessary to open independent cooking window. And students give many advices to the restaurant. 4 Recommendations Not only the restaurant dont want to loss customers, but also students dont like to eat outside. As we all know, the food on the road is unclean and unhealthy to some degree and it does bad to students health. Thus its urgent to improve the quality of the restaurant to satisfy the students. Recommendations are given as follows: Firstly, provide more varied dishes. Nobody wants to eat the same thing everyday, so if there are more choices there will be more customers. Secondly, increase the quantity of each portion. Students are so busy and tired everyday because they need to study and do some part-time job. If they arent full after eating up the whole portion, they will choice eat outside the next time probably. So add more food for the students and theyll be more satisfied. Thirdly, add more service windows. There are so many students while five windows at most. So they have to spend a lot of time standing in a queue to buy food. It is very boring and time-wasted. Also, there are many other advices, such as improve the environment, make the food delicious, lower the price and so on. If the advices are accepted and carried out, we can imagine that the restaurant will be clean and comfortable. Students can choice what to eat from varied and delicious meals and get warm service. At that time, most students eat in the canteen happily and healthily and they dont need to think hard where to have next meal any more, which can do good to their study.Acknowledgement We would like to express our gratitude to all those who helped us during the writing of this thesis.
