2019-2020年高二英語(yǔ)話題閱讀訓(xùn)練 Week Seven旅游交通一、閱讀理解(共25小題;共50.0分)A Passengers at Scotlands two biggest airports will experience privacy-friendly body scans from this weekend. The move is part of a UK roll-out of the security technology demanded by the US. Full-body scanning machines, which bounce(彈回) radio waves off the body to detect black or hidden weapons, have already been installed in Glasgow and Edinburgh airports and will go live on Saturday. Travelers will either be randomly selected for scanning or will undergo a scan if there is a security concern or a metal detector is set off, the airports said. Unlike the controversial X-ray scanners used in Manchester, called "naked scanners", the technology being set in Scotland will produce a model-style, generic image of a body, with suspect items represented by a box. All images taken are deleted as soon as they have been assessed. It follows an order by the Department for Transport for body scans to be carried out on all flights to the US, though passengers on all flights will be subjected to the new authority, the airports said in separate statements. It will be required for selected passengers to have the scan and those who refuse will not be allowed to board their flight. A member of airport staff will be present throughout the process, which will take place within the security search area. Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said, "The introduction of the body scanner is in direct response to new rules set out by the Department for Transport relating to the screening of passengers." The technology employed by the body scanner is designed in such a way that it maintains(維護(hù)) the security of the airport while also maintaining the privacy of the passenger. "We will also be providing passengers with leaflets containing information on the scanner and the reasons behind its introduction." Gordon Dewar, chief executive of Edinburgh Airport, added: "The scan is quick, simple and safe for everyone and does not do harm to individuals privacy." 1. The statues are part of a collection of life-size figures of warriors and horses called the Terracotta Army. The group of more than 7,000 life-size clay sculptures was built in 210 BC to guard the tomb of Chinas first emperor, Qin Shihuang. Shen Maosheng, from the Qin Shihuang Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum, said archaeologists had located another 11 warriors but have not yet begun to dig up the sculptures. "The most significant discovery this time around is that the relics that were found were well-preserved and colorfully painted," Maosheng told AFP. The sculptures were discovered by a group of farmers in 1974. While digging a well, the workers found three pits filled with the lifelike figures, which were made of a type of terracotta clay. Experts say that long ago, Emperor Qin Shihuang ordered the creation of the clay army, along with a 20-square-mile tomb in which to house it. For 36 years, 700,000 laborers crafted this underground city. It contains models of palaces and towers, and was protected from invaders by automatically-triggered crossbows(弩). The city lay buried for more than 2,000 years. Today, people from around the world visit China to see the terracotta warriors. What makes the soldiers so special? Each figure was individually carved, so they have different hairstyles, expressions and facial features. The details make the soldiers appear true to life. Inside the pit, the statues are arranged by military rank. The higher the rank, the taller the statue. The shortest statue is 5 feet 8 inches tall. The tallest is 6 feet 6 inches. The lower half of each soldier is made of solid clay, while the upper half is hollow. This makes it easier for the figures to remain upright. The discovery of Xians 110 new warriors es after a new finding about the Great Wall of China. An archaeological survey revealed the Great Wall of China is more than twice as long as previously thought. The wall was originally measured to be 5,500 miles but is now measured at 13,170 miles long. Beijing officials plan to open two new sections of the Great Wall and to expand other areas to make room for more tourists.11. The life-size clay sculptures were made . Going where you want to go, when you want to go, with whomever you want to go with. Allows you to find your own travel techniques (as opposed to going with a tour group). Cons: Traveling alone (24/7) can be scary at times. Must overe any shyness you may have in order to meet other people. Deciding where you want to go and what to do once you are there requires more effort on your part than letting someone else make all or most of the decisions. Forces you to show your independence (this can be a pro if you think being independent is important and possible for your level of emotional growth). For Your Information: I traveled solo during my three month trip to Europe and I had an excellent time. I wouldnt want to travel any other way, for this kind of travel offered me so much freedom. Keep in mind that this advice is ing from someone who is relatively shy and had never traveled anywhere alone before going to Europe. Traveling with a panion or panions Pros: You always have someone to talk to/consult with. You can share food, clothing, housing, etc to reduce your expenses. You will have someone take your picture in front of the Eiffel Tower. You may find a friend who can support you or share your joy and sadness forever. Cons: Being with the same person/people 24/7 can be very annoying. Group travel can be risky (people can take all your money, cheat you, etc.). Memories of your trip may may be constant fighting over where to go and what to see, etc. Traveling as group can be intimidating to other travelers because groups are likely to be exclusive(排斥) and may make it more difficult to meet other people.16. What kind of people are suitable to travel solo? A. People good at making decisions. B. People with an independent quality. C. Those with many travel techniques. D. Those who want to enjoy much freedom.17. Which is NOT the benefit that traveling with a panion can bring? A. Develop a life long friendship. B. Save money. C. Learn some photographing techniques. D. A. you cant depend on someone else all the time B. it is boring to talk to the same panions all the time C. you cant express your own opinions freely D. you dont share the same interest as your panionE Planning a trip to Japan? No doubt youve planned visits to key attractions in Tokyo, Osaka, or other major cities. Good, theyll be worth the trip and any major city can offer more enjoyable sites than youll have time to see. A number of travel agencies can provide lists of hotspots for incredible shopping, nightlife and fine dining unlike any other place on earth. Even if its Japans ancient culture you seek, shrines and castles within a city like Tokyo will educate and enlighten you. So what could be missing from such a fabulous vacation? Getting off the beaten path as they say, thats what. Having traveled in large cities, small towns and the rural countryside, I feel pelled to share a few thoughts, and maybe a few precautions with first-time visitors to Japan. My first thought. get out of town, but keep reading before taking my advice. If you wish to have a true cultural experience then nothing beats visiting small towns where tour buses dont stop. Driving your own car is the only way to go here. There are rental car panies in Japan which specialize in servicing tourists. Dont worry about driving on the "wrong side" as youll quickly bee used to it. Precautions: Youll need to take a "personal adventure level" reading before embarking on this trip. Unless you speak some Japanese, munication will be very limited. Carry a pen, paper and map at all times. Most Japanese do not speak conversational English. This is especially true once you leave the cities behind. Lodging, dining and even getting gas will take more effort. Imagine driving through the rural US and speaking no English, how would you get along? I spoke no Japanese whatsoever when I first drove about the country and did fine. It was challenging but just as rewarding. I do remend that others learn some Japanese first. It would be so much easier. Mitake Japan mountains in Autumn. Benefits: I guarantee that if you travel for even a short time in the rural country, you will have stories unmatched by any friends who stayed on guided city tours. The best part isI cant tell you what theyll be. Do stop at local restaurants and points of interest. Do make an effort to municate with those around you. You will find that as a whole the Japanese are very friendly and weling to foreign visitors. There will be exceptions but not many. Along your country journey youll find people who have never met a foreigner and have many questions for you, shops selling items you have never seen and restaurants with short menus serving true and affordable Japanese food. Its the people youll meet (if you make an effort) that youll most remember.21. For whom is the passage written? A. Visitors who want to do shopping in Japan. B. Visitors who want to enjoy nightlife in Japan. C. Visitors who want to learn about Japanese culture. D. Visitors who want to enjoy natural beauty in Japan.22. How can you visit small towns in Japan? A. By tour bus.B. By car.C. On foot.D. By bike.23. To make your visits to small towns pleasant, you are advised to . A. choose a better travel agency B. read as many books about Japan as possible C. learn about some rules for lodging and dining D. learn some Japanese to make munication easier.24. The underlined sentence suggests that the travel in the rural country . A. will bring you many unexpected surprises B. will be interesting with a guide leading you C. is often well planned and organized D. will make sure you get the best service25.
