Ling was born in a small village in northern Sichuan. Upon pletion of their primary school education, her parents started a small business. Five years ago, they moved to Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan, with Ling and her younger brother. They have purchased an apartment and a small shop there. “My family isnt short of money. My father doesnt want me to pursue university education because he thinks it not worthwhile going to university, ”Ling said. Her father estimates it will cost a total of 80, 000 yuan in tuition fees and living expenses to finish a four-year university education. If his daughter works for four years instead, she can earn at least 80, 000 yuan. With that money, she can start a small business. “In my neighborhood, at least 10 university graduates cannot find jobs and stay at home, ”her father told the reporter. He said as a primary school graduate, he earned more than many university graduates with his small business. He said his view that attending a university is not worthwhile is not groundless, pointing that nearly 7 million students graduated from institutions of higher learning nationwide this year and their employment situation is not so good. To persuade her father to support her higher education financially, Ling has done many things but in vain. After her story spread online, a survey was made on the website to seek netizens views. More than 10, 000 netizens replied and 71 percent supported her fathers view. About 50 percent thought society was a good university and about 20 percent thought a person could improve himself or herself anywhere. Despite strong opposition from survey respondents, 55 readers of them said higher education could broaden ones horizons. They want to help Ling financially since she cannot borrow money from her relatives who share her fathers view. 21. Most of the time I am simply doing finger exercises, another form of piano practice without the beautiful tones. Sometimes, however, I receive a gift, reminding me of the gifts in my life. The following passage is one of those gifts. Peter Jones is a 92-year-old, small but proud man. Every morning he is fully dressed by eight oclock, with his hair fashionably bed and his face shaved perfectly, even though he is actually blind. He would move to a nursing home today because his wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the entrance hall of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. As he moved his walker skillfully to the elevator, the nurse provided a visual description of his tiny room, “I love it, ”he stated with the enthusiasm just like an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy. “Mr. Jones, you havent seen the room; just wait. ”said the nurse. “That doesnt have anything to do with it, ”he replied. “Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesnt depend on how the furniture is arranged. . . its how I arrange my mind. I have already decided to love it. Its a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice: I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, Ill focus on the new day and all the happy memories Ive stored away. ”May each of our days continue to be a gift. 25. In fact, not only are they dirty, they might even be more dirty than their gasoline-powered cousins. People in California love to talk about“zero-emissions(零排放)vehicles”, but people in California seem to be clueless about where electricity es from. Power plants most or all use fire to make it. Apart from the few people who have their roofs covered with solar cells, we get our electricity from generators(發(fā)電機). Generators are fueled by somethingusually coal, oil, but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms and geothermal(地熱的)plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something. In other words, those“zero-emissions”cars are likely coal-burning cars. Because the coal is burned somewhere else, it looks clean. It is not true. Its as if the California Greens are covering their eyes“If I cant see it, its not happening. ”Gasoline is an incredibly efficient way to power a vehicle; a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it. But when you take that gas(or another fuel)and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice part of that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heatat the generator, through the transmission lines, etc. A gallon of gas may drive your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas wont get you nearly as far, so electric cars burn more fuel than gasoline-powered ones. If our electricity came mostly from wind or geothermal energy, or solar energy, then an electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical and economic reasons, we dont use much of those energy sources. In addition, electric cars batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill. And finally, when cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread across all the roads. When its a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place. Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot. 29. Whats the main idea of the passage? A. Electric cars arent actually clean. B. Electric cars are zero-emissions vehicles. C. Zero-emissions vehicles are popular. D. Gasoline-powered cars are more efficient. 【解析】選A。 30. Which of the following words can replace“be clueless about”in Paragraph 2? A. be familiar withB. be curious aboutC. fail to understandD. show their interest in【解析】選C。 31. In the authors opinion, pared with cars using gas, electric cars are more. A. environmentally friendlyB. expensiveC. efficientD. harmful【解析】選D。 32. It can be inferred from the passage that. A. electric cars batteries are poisonous for a long timeB. now electric cars are used more than their gasoline powered cousinsC. zero-emissions vehicles should be chosen to protect our environmentD. electric cars are not clean in that we get electricity mainly by burning something【解析】選D。 DPeople born in winter are more likely to suffer mental health disorders, according to a recent study carried out by researchers at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. Researchers raised baby mice from birth to weaning(斷奶)in either“summer”light cycles of 16 hours of light and 8 hours of dark or“winter”cycles of 8 hours of light and 16 hours of dark. A third group experienced 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark a day. Then half the winter mice stayed in a winter cycle, while half switched to a summer schedule. The summer mice were similarly split. The mice raised in equal periods of light and dark were split into three groups, one of which stayed on the 12-hour schedule, one of which joined the winter group, and one of which joined the summer group. After 28 days, it turns out the summer-born mice behaved the same whether they stayed on the summer cycle or switched to winter. But among the winter-born mice, those stayed in winter kept their previous schedule, while those that switched to summer stayed active for an extra hour and a half, which indicates that mice born and weaned in a winter light cycle showed dramatic disruptions in their biological clocks. The finding is the first of its kind in mammals, and it could explain why people born in winter are at higher risk for mental health disorders including bipolar depression, schizophrenia and seasonal affective disorder. “We know that the biological clock regulates mood in humans, ”said study researcher McMahon. “If the mechanism(機制)is similar to the one that we found in mice operates in humans, then it could not only have an effect on a number of behavioral disorders, but also have a more general effect on personality. ”【文章大意】本文介紹了一項最新的研究結(jié)果, 結(jié)果表明冬天出生的人更容易患心理疾病。33. How many groups of mice are there finally in all in the experiment? A. Four. B. Five. C. Six. D. Seven. 34. Whats the main idea of the text? A. The biological clock regulates mood in humans. B. People born in winter are at higher risk for physical health disorders. C. Being born i
